(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - “Erdogan should take a lesson from Mursi’s fate and accept that (political) power cannot be maintained through suppressing the will of the opposition,” Leader of the Republican People's Party of Turkey Kemal Kilicdarohlu said.
He noted that the military coup in Egypt succeeded only because Mursi ignored the will of his opponents and other Egyptian citizens.
Kilicdarohlu warned Erdogan to avoid boasting about his growing popular support in the past, saying, “Mursi also enjoyed the Egyptian people' large support and votes, but he approached his country's problems just like Pharaoh and Erdogan and decided to ignore the opposition to win some votes and we all witnessed that he could only stand for one year.”
“I ask Erdogan to quit imitating Pharaoh and believe that materialization of democracy is not only in counting the ballots since a political authority is responsible towards all citizens and he cannot be just the prime minister or president of those who have voted to him,” He added.
On Friday, Erdogan condemned the military intervention that toppled Mursi, and criticized the West for failing to brand the ouster a coup.
The Turkish prime minister pointed to his country's history of coups, warning that such military uprisings come at a heavy price.
After days of massive anti-government protests in Egypt, the military overthrew the country's President Mohamed Mursi.
Late Wednesday in a speech on state television, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the head of Egypt’s army, announced that Mursi was no longer in office.
Police later began arresting key presidential aides and the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Sisi also suspended the country’s constitution, saying that new parliamentary elections will be held.
The army chief declared Head of Supreme Constitutional Court Adli Mansour as the interim president.
